Why is it important to maintain my catch basins/inserts?
When initially installed, catch basin inserts were designed to capture pollutants before entering the storm drain. When properly cleaned they can be quite effective at performing this task. However, once the insert becomes compacted with dirt and debris, it loses most of its ability to capture pollutant and stops serving its purpose.
Am I legally bound to maintain my stormwater BMP’s?
It depends on the property, location, and year of construction. Contact your local stormwater official of public works derpartment to verify your obligation to stormwater maintenance.
Why should I maintain my stormwater BMP’s if I am not legally bound to do so?
The EPA stated that one of the biggest sources of pollution for our waters is stormwater and urban runoff. By maintaining your stormwater devices you are helping to reduce the amount of pollution that ends up in our rivers, lakes, and oceans. If everyone would maintain their stormwater devices we would see a huge reduction in water pollution.
Isn’t maintaining my stormwater devices expensive?
